A very historic beach relating to the black community during the days of segregation. Good energy has gone into preserving this heritage for future generations and not bowing to the pressures of wealthy developers just to the north and south. American Beach deserves recognition for keeping this historical accuracy alive. In 2002 it was put on the list of the National Register of Historic Places.
The complete historic district, of which American Beach is just a small part of, is about 400 acres in size. There are more than 60 buildings that encompass the district. This beach can be accessed from Burney Park.
The area known as American Beach was established in 1935 by Abraham Lincoln Lewis. Because of segregation, African Americans were not allowed on the beaches in nearby Jacksonville. Although Mr. Lewis created this area for his employees - he owned the Afro-American Life Insurance Company - it became an extremely popular beach for many additional families and churches. The area and the beach began to fall into disarray in the 1960's. In 1977, his great-granddaughter, MaVynee Betsch (aka the Beach Lady) began working to preserve the area again. For more history and a chance to hear MaVynee (who has since passed), this is a wonderful youtube documentary.

There are covered picnic pavillions, six in total, that offer shelter from the sun, and fairly new grills. The playground is shaded - which is a treat for those wanting to be outside but not baked in the Florida sun!
There's a 150' fishing pier, which is lit for night fishing. A boat ramp is available, as is a floating dock for hand launching canoes and kayaks. A second 118' dock is at the south end of the fishing pier.
