This preserve located on San Carlos Bay is over 700 acres, and is considered a natural, "Old Florida" area. It emcompasses beaches, Mangrove forests, and salt flats. The park was originally a half acre in size, and was dedicated in 1949. It was named after Dr. Ralphe Bunche - the first African American to receive the Novel Peace Prize. The park was left virtually unchanged until early in this century, when invasive / exotic vegetation was removed and adjacent acreage was purchased.
There is an environmentally friendly facility at the park. Although there is no running water, there are composting restroom facilities. All electric for the building is through solar power.
There are two piers that double as fishing piers and wildlife viewing areas. Shoreline fishing is easily accessible. Hand launching a canoe or kayak is permitted and you can get fairly close to the water with your vehicle to make launching easier. No trailers are allowed however, so your canoe or kayak has to come in on top of your vehicle, or in your truck.
Lee County Parks & Recreation Parking Stickers are honored at this location. No pets or alcohol permitted.
