Detailed Information on the Yellowtail Snapper |
Appearance: The back and upper sides are olive to bluish with yellow spots; lower sides and the belly with alternating narrow, longitudinal pink and yellow stripes. A prominent midlateral yellow stripe begins at mouth and runs to tail, broadening as it passes the dorsal fins. The caudal fin is yellow and deeply forked, no dark lateral spot. Habitat: The juveniles are usually inshore on grassbeds and back reefs. The adults are nearshore or offshore over the sandy areas near reefs. Behavior: Yellowtail Snappers are found mainly in tropical waters usually spawning in midsummer. Rarely exceeds 30 inches and 5 pounds in size. Feeds on small fish and invertebrates.
